Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital offers the only allergy and asthma clinic in southwest Virginia that is dedicated solely to pediatric patients. Children are referred for evaluation of coughing, wheezing, chest pain and other breathing difficulties. The staff also treat children who have allergies or other problems with their immune systems. Cool Cities, a leading local environmental organization, works with the asthma coalition on outdoor and indoor air quality issues, including reductions in harmful emissions (ozone and particles) caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, diesel and petroleum and improvements in human health and indoor air quality as included in Cool Green Biz, a green business certification program developed by Cool Cities and offered through both Cool Cities and the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce.
RIDE Solutions provides alternative transportation options to residents of the greater New River and Roanoke Valleys such as carpooling, public transit, biking, walking, and ride home services. These free services help reduce traffic on local roads and improve air quality such as reduced ozone and particulate matter concentrations.
Better Building Works are energy and design consultants that have partnered with nonprofits such as the The Greater Roanoke Valley Asthma & Air Quality Coalition. The partnership is designed to evenly donate 10 percent of energy assessment proceeds to four local, nonprofit organizations. Better Building Works provide energy assessments that lead to cleaner air quality, thus benefiting the health of individuals living in the Greater Roanoke Valley. The Virginia Asthma Coalition (VAC) is a state-wide partnership devoted to reducing morbidity and mortality associated with asthma. VAC provides asthma resources on their website and holds four meetings a year for members of the coalition to attend and help build asthma awareness.
The American Lung Association of Virginia is dedicated to saving lives through improving lung health and preventing lung disease through the main methods of Education, Advocacy, and Research. The association fights for healthy air, which will in turn influence healthy lungs.
